![]() ![]() The first two Ghostbusters films and the ‘Real Ghostbusters’ animated series remain as fresh, vital and entertaining as they were upon their respective initial releases. ![]() It would be nice to see Ecto Cooler make a long overdue comeback. With the timing just right for a comeback, many believe that the rebirth of Ecto Cooler is imminent once the Feig reboot is released in theaters next summer. Major corporations usually do not renew long dormant copyrights unless there are plans to actually use the name in a major product. On November 18, their trademark application was approved. Or was it? With Sony set to relaunch the Ghostbusters franchise next year via the ill-conceived all-female reboot directed by the overrated Paul Feig and Slimer expected to appear in a cameo, Coca-Cola applied to re-register their Ecto Cooler copyright trademark last September. The change did nothing to boost sagging sales, so by 2007, the drink was discontinued completely. Sales dropped drastically enough that Minute Maid authorized a second name change to Crazy Citrus Cooler. That was when Coca-Cola foolishly retired the name Ecto Cooler in favor of the lame Shoutin’ Orange Tangergreen. However, even after the animated series came to an end in 1990, Slimer and his namesake drink managed to have an incredibly long shelf life, lasting until 2001. The idea going into Ecto Cooler’s creation was that the drink would be discontinued once the parent TV show stopped producing first-run episodes and syndication ran dry. They figured that creating a tie-in drink featuring the popular cartoon character Slimer would translate into a boost in Hi-C sales and TV ratings for the parent cartoon. ![]() Interestingly enough, Coca-Cola at the time also owned Columbia Pictures Entertainment, which distributed all things ‘Ghostbusters’. Originally, Ecto Cooler was conceived as a limited-time drink by Hi-C’s parent company Coca-Cola. Although it hasn’t been heard from in almost 15 years, you know what they say about comebacks. Sporting the lovable animated ghost Slimer of ‘ The Real Ghostbusters‘ fame, it was the drink of choice for many a young child that adored the Ghostbusters and their adorable ghost pal. If you’re like me and were a child of the 1980s, then you’ll fondly remember the delightful Hi-C fruit drink Ecto Cooler. ![]()
